Rights: Work is published herewith the author's express consent and permission and on a one-time basis unless otherwise contracted by Masonry. We reserve the right to edit articles for length, style and content. Click here for a copyright release form.

Needs: Nonfiction features, sidebars and columns pertaining to all realms of masonry (brick, block and stone systems), current construction news, case studies or business topics. At this point in time, we do not publish information on poured concrete, stucco or tile. If in doubt as to the acceptability of your subject matter, please ask – e-mail jmorrell@lionhrtpub.com or call Jennifer Morrell, Editor, at (770) 431-0867 ext. 225.

Writers must have expertise in the subject matter or interview at least one industry expert. As this is the official publication of the Mason Contractors Association of America, articles should be written with the masonry construction business owner in mind. Articles geared toward consumers and do-it-yourselfers will not be considered. Those writers not involved directly in the masonry industry should submit a query and rough draft to make sure you’re in-sync with our readership. All work submitted must be informative, well written and proofed.

Finally, our editorial calendar is posted online at http://www.masonrymagazine.com/adv-edit.html. Just because your topic does not show up in the editorial calendar does not mean we’re not interested in your idea.

Length:
Features are generally 800 to 2,500 words, depending on the subject matter discussed and the amount of pictures, illustrations and/or tables included. Feature sidebars are typically 350-600 words, with 0-2 images. Columns usually run 600-1,000 words with an occasional headshot.

Graphics:
Usually, authors submit all of the images, illustrations and tables that accompany the feature and sidebar articles. Graphics must be either: high-resolution digital files (300 dpi or higher, in EPS, TIFF, JPEG or press optimized PDF format) sent by e-mail; or images can be burnt onto a CD or mailed as hard copy originals to: Jennifer Morrell, Lionheart Publishing, Inc., 506 Roswell St., Suite 220, Marietta, Ga. 30060. Hard copy photographs will be returned after layout. Photo credits are given to the photographer and/or company providing the image.

Cover images are accepted after review and receipt of a signed photo release form by the photographer/illustrator. Typically, Masonry cover images encompass: buildings that are predominately brick, block or stone, with preference going to structures built by MCAA members; masonry events or themes; or images pertaining to a feature story scheduled for that issue. Cover images can be submitted as original, hard copy 8x10s or 8x12s or scanned onto a CD and mailed to: Jennifer Morrell, Lionheart Publishing, Inc., 506 Roswell St., Suite 220, Marietta, Ga. 30060. Digital specifications: files must be in high-resolution EPS, TIFF, PSD or JPEG format; saved as CMYK; and an overall size of 8-1/2"x11" (trim size 8.125" x 10.785"). For more information, contact Jennifer Morrell by e-mail or call (770) 431-0867 ext. 225.

Payment:
Currently, we are not a paying market. However, we include author bylines and bios, and send the author several copies of the magazine with their published work. More importantly, we often submit published articles for various awards and many of our authors have received honors.

How to Submit: Please submit as a Microsoft Word attachment. Send your submissions to: jmorrell@lionhrtpub.com. All entries will remain confidential and receive a reply.

Response Time:
We typically respond to manuscripts within one week and queries within two days. If you don’t hear from us in this amount of time, please contact us to make sure we received your submission.

Deadlines:
Issue deadlines are typically six weeks prior to the issue date. For instance, the March issue deadline falls around the second to last week of January. Articles are usually scheduled two to three months in advance. If you wish for your article to appear in a certain issue, you need to contact us during this scheduling period. We cannot guarantee publication of articles received after the issue deadline.

Tips for Writers:
1) A light, personable tone usually works well for our magazine. 2) Include an author bio at the end of your article. Bios are typically one to three sentences and can include: name, title, employer, education, awards, committee and association memberships, contact information and other pertinent information. 3) If in doubt, ask. A two-minute phone call is better than a two-hour rewrite. Call Jennifer Morrell, Editor, at (770) 431-0867 ext. 225, or e-mail.
