Pattern Texture and Design

Combined with excellent craftsmanship make this Arizona State Industrial Commission Building in Phoenix, Arizona, a beautiful public facility.

Blending pattern, texture and design with craftsmanship was the task of Mason Contractor Ace Springfield, a Phoenix Chapter member, on the Arizona State Industrial Commission Building. The photograph above testifies that he completed his job in an excellent manner.

This structure exemplifies how masonry materials can be used to compliment each other in producing a building of outstanding aesthetic qualities and thus being a credit to the entire industry.

The building was designed by Associated State Capitol Architects (Place & Place of Tucson and Lescher & Mahoney of Phoenix). Structural Engineer was Carl Kott with Manhattan-Dickman the general contractor. The exterior brick were selected to match the existing structure, a portion of which can be seen in the extreme left hand corner of the photo, which was built in 1950. The buff norman brick were backed-up with common brick. The white vertical band is ceramic veneer manufactured by Gladding-MeBean & Co.

The solar screen units, light cream in color, are made of clay similar to that which would be used for flue linings. The overhangs projecting in front of the solar screen areas are "Cordek" slab units supported by angles within the brickwork returns.

The entrance screen wall is a pattern brickwork design supporting the poured concrete canopy.

Bricklayers from Local No. 3, B. M. & P. I. U., Phoenix, were employed by Ace Springfield on this project.
