The president of CMCA discussed the possibilities of a tie-in with the Foremost campaign. SCPI has been actively promoting cavity wall construction insulated with vermiculite water-repellent masonry fill since the Institute approved the fill after rigorous testing two years ago. Both Wetzler and Antonsen felt this was a fine opportunity for masonry construction, and the project got going immediately.

"I felt this was an ideal time for a promotion such as this one," Antonsen says. "The whole building industry needs something new, and masonry is about the only material that hasn't been fully exploited yet. We are just scratching the surface of the middle-price-range residential field, and now is a good time to give masonry a big promotional boost."

The $25,000 home has insulated cavity walls of brick exterior and block interior, with an SCR brick attached garage. The Zonolite-vermiculite masonry fill was poured directly into the cavity and into the cores of the foundation block.

"Water-repellent Zonolite is an excellent insulation for cavity walls because it doesn't settle," Antonsen says. "It is certainly water-repellent too. During the construction of this home, we had quite a bit of rain, and the bags of masonry fill were exposed to the weather. The material stayed dry, even after a rain filled the basement with 3 ft. of water."

Ronald Landborg, bricklayer for Martin Antonsen & Sons, insulated the cavity with Zonolite Masonry Fill.

Designed by Branstrom & Branstrom, A.I.A., the Foremost home has 14,000 sq. ft. of floor area. There is a double-sided stone fireplace and exposed beam ceilings in the kitchen and living room. Partitions throughout are concrete block, with plaster applied directly to the block in most areas. Some exposed block walls are used for textural variation. The construction has both weep holes and flashing. There is a concrete driveway and the grounds are landscaped.

Members of the CMCA cooperated wholeheartedly in the promotion, donating their crews for construction work and making up the architectural fees and other expenses not covered by donations. Many other organizations helped by furnishing money, and materials, among them Minnesota Lathing and Plasterers Bureau, Twin Cities Concrete Promotion Assn., Ceramic Tile Assn., Bricklayers Local Union, Cement Masons Union #557, Twin Cities Stone Suppliers, and Construction and General Laborers Union. Western Mineral Products Co. supplied the Zonolite masonry insulation and the precast, lightweight concrete tile for the roof deck.

"We are thinking of doing something like this again next year," Antonsen says. "We may call it "Home of the Future' and have an architectural competition for the best design utilizing masonry construction.

"The main selling points of masonry are warmth, low maintenance, quiet, and low insurance rates, as well as excellent resale value for masonry homes," he adds. "A well-built home, properly publicized, is the best demonstration we can give, to contractors and the public alike, of our practical and beautiful material for home construction."

Antonsen has been in the masonry contracting business for 20 years and has been a member of the CMCA for ten years and president for the last two. He is also a director of the CMCA and of the MCAA.
