Arthur H. ay, Jr., Emerson, N. J., won the of 1961 Champion Bricklayer Apprentice in BM&PIU's national competition at the annual AFL-CIO Trades & Label Show here April 11.
Runner-up was James W. Stockton, Phoenix, Ariz.; third place went to Emil E. Padgett, Dallas, Tex., and Steve Conner, Columbus, Ohio, captured fourth.
The 20-year-old winner, whose father and grandfather are journeyman bricklayers, received $500 from the Bricklayer's Union and was awarded $100 and the Belden Trophy, symbol of the year's top bricklayer apprentice, from the Structural Clay Products Institute.
In addition, the Mason Contractors Association of America presented Gray with a bronze plaque for his performance.
Representing Hackensack Local No. 3, BM&PIU, the youthful champ won over 41 other state champions in the Detroit national finals.
The second-place winner was awarded $300; third place received $200 and fourth-place winner was given $100 from the BM&PIU.
The five-day contest required journeymen hopefuls to build a variety of brick walls testing their skill, workmanship and production.
The BM&PIU has sponsored the annual competition for the past 18 years and receives strong support from the Mason Contractors Association of America and the Structural Clay Products Institute.
