The world's fastest commercial jetliner, the StarStream, is now flying on Trans World Airlines coast to coast routes across the United States. Technically designated the Boeing 707-131B, the StarStream's DynaFan powerplant delivers 18,000 pounds of thrust, the most powerful jet by a U. S. manufacturer. The DynaFan is the Pratt & Whitney JT3D-3 turbofan.
Trans World Airlines has been designated as the "official carrier" of the Contractors Association of America for members planning to attend next year's convention. The annual meeting will be held in Pittsburgh January 27-30, 1963 at the Pittsburgh-Hilton Hotel.
TWA will have its entire fleet of majestic StarStream jets in service at the time of the national convention. These Boeing 707-131B jets, powered by DynaFan engines, carry 131 passengers and are the fastest commercial jetliners in service.
The first StarStream jet went into service April 27 on the nonstop New York-San Francisco run. As TWA receives deliveries of the additional 17, they will serve other major cities on the airlines routes, including Pittsburgh, site of the 1963 convention.
Four DynaFan jet engines power the Starstreams. Each delivers 18,000 pounds thrust, or a total of 72,000 pounds thrust at full power on takeoff (one pound thrust is equal to one horsepower at 350 miles an hour). The StarStreams are capable of 630 miles an hour.
Greater Pittsburgh Airport is the world's second largest. Built at a cost of $40,000,000, its air terminal building is an "air city" of comfort and service for the traveler.
If you prefer rail, three major railroads with convenient downtown terminals put the heart of Pittsburgh within easy reach. The B & O has extremely economical fares from the Midwest. For instance, from Chicago three or more persons traveling use "one" ticket at a round trip cost of $26.35 per person. Check with the B & O ticket agent for exact details.
For those who plan to drive Pittsburgh is accessible through a modern highway system, including toll road complex that makes driving a real pleasure. Within the city multilane highways have been built and others are under construction to insure a smooth flow of traffic.
