PATTERN AND TEXTURE

Examples of beautiful and ingenious applications of brick and tile created by architects from 14 countries are shown in a handsome new book, "Pattern and Texture," produced by the Allied Masonry Council for distribution to American architects. It was first unveiled at the MCAA convention in Houston.

The high interest of the architectural profession in this second work on masonry esthetics—the first was the renowned "Man and Masonry"—is indicated by the fact that the April issue of Progressive Architecture is devoting eight editorial pages to showing examples from the book.

The book, whose author is Bernd Foerster, of the School of Architecture, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, discusses patterns and textures as basic means of architectural expression. The purpose of the book, Foerster says in the foreword, "is to stimulate further exploration of their expressive potential in building design." Chapters in the book explore patterns and textures in terms of Plane, Texture, Function, Motion, Light, Contrast and Scale, and Expression.

"Pattern and Texture" grew out of the Allied Masonry Council's first exploration into the esthetic values of brick and tile in architectural design. The first result was the "Man and Masonry" film and book. The film was the first American architectural film shown at an international conference of architects in London. The book won a prize in a national competition for the best publications campaign of 1960. Now "Pattern and Texture," produced in similar format, goes into one important element of "Man and Masonry" in greater depth. Scheduled for production in 1963 will be a third book in the series.
