Financing for the Mason Contractor

(Continued from preceding page)

It should reflect your fixed assets, with the proper depreciation, and your long term or fixed liabilities; and it should reflect any other assets or deferred charges, and your net worth, with your capital properly stated and your surplus, if any, shown as capital or earned surplus. It is a very simple matter. There are accented ways of doing it so that a banker can tell at a glance.

When I use the word "banker," I am not talking about the fellow sitting in your bank; I am talking about anybody from whom you want money or credit. That's how I define a banker.

Now, if your current assets are not comfortably in excess of your current liabilities, you are not managing your business correctly. Now, I am not going to tell you, in this magic formula, that there is two-to-one, three-to-one, one and one-half to one, as an absolute requirement, because a good deal of that depends upon how fast you collect your receivables. A good deal depends upon whether your payables are on a discount basis or not. But I will make this general statement: If you look at your balance sheet, and your current assets are not comfortably in excess of your current liabilities, you are not managing the business properly, and something needs to be done about it that minute. In the question and answer period, if I get to where you want to ask some questions, I will be glad to answer some specific questions as to what can be done about some of these problems.

Next month's issue of Masonry will carry Part II of Mr. Roger's address.

Pattern and Texture

(Continued from page 14)

"Earth and Fire," a discussion of the design us color in masonry.

Leaders of the masonry industry urge that mason contractors, as well as producers and union representatives see to it that a copy of "Pattern and Texture" is placed on the office shelf of every registered architect in the nation. The book, which is hard-bound, with 64 pages and more than 100 photographs, makes an excellent gift for an architect and has a place on the flyleaf page for the name of the giver.

Copies may be obtained from the Mason Contractors Association of America, 208 So. La Salle Street, Chicago 4. Illinois. The price is $2.50 per copy. For 50 or more copies, the cost is $2.25 per copy.
