UTILIZE 4 INCH REINFORCED BRICK WALLS ON TEXAS HOUSING PROJECT

The recently completed San Antonio, Texas, Res-Project for Advanced Housing (SARAH) was an attempt at a breakthrough of a long-standing problem of building modern, attractive homes for low-income groups. By relaxing code restrictions and utilizing advanced building technology with old and new materials, this project was intended to illustrate that attractive, durable, livable homes could be built and sold for less than $7,000.

Of the 28 homes in Project SARAH, four were of masonry material, one of these utilizing a 4" Reinforced Brick Wall system. The relatively new s" Reinforced Brick Wall concept was first introduced in North Carolina and further developed to that which appeared in Project SARAH.

With the experience gained in Project SARAH this concept has been further refined and the information available in a new brochure, "New Profits With Low 4-Inch Reinforced Brick Walls", available from the Products Association of the Southwest, P.O. Box 4, Austin, Texas. The 1,000 sq. ft. house presented in this brochure is not intended as a rigid design but only as a guide to demonstrate what can be done with this wall system. Its advantages, economies, restrictions and limitations are outlined in some detail to insure proper construction procedure.

This method of construction, although developed for low-priced housing, is applicable to many types of buildings. It is reported that savings of approximately 30 to 40% over conventional brick veneer walls are realized with this wall system. Therefore, due to this reduction in cost, the brick home becomes competitive with the least expensive wall on the market today.
