...the continuous quality control system in the manufacture of Arketex Ceramic Glazed Structural Tile.

This wall surface starts with a fire that would finish most others.

The colorful, glazed surface of Arketex Structural Facing Tile is matured in 2050 heat enough to destroy most applied finishes. It is kiln-burned by a method that assures you of getting tile as tough in body as it is on the surface. The tile is heated gradually and evenly, as it moves slowly through the large, circular kilns. It's well worth the three long days of burning it takes - because the final result is a wall surface that will last for generations.

Cover photo for this month is the beautiful Jackson Coliseum. In seeking out additional information on building we contacted the Mason Contractor, Harry Strauss, Jr., Dizic Construction Co. Inc., Birmingham, Ala., and feel that his comments do an excellent job describing the job.

"In regard to a description of what went into the masonry work on subject job, it is as follows. If you will recall, several years ago I was talking with you about construction of these screen walls which you see in picture. Each one of these panels are approximately 8 feet wide and 45 feet high. They are made up of a course of 8x5x12 buff unglazed tile laid in the conventional manner and a course of norman brick laid rowlock fashion twelve inches on centers, projecting two inches past the face of the unglazed tile. Both of these materials are buff material as manufactured by the Taylor Clay Products Company, Salisbury, North Carolina. They are approximately 50,000 brick and 50,000 unglazed tile in these screens. In addition to this material, there is approximately 275,000 buff brick, comprising some panels on the inside of the Coliseum and Garden Walls on the outside which are not visible in the picture. And about 40,000 concrete block on the inside and approximately 100 pieces of 6T Series glazed tile. This glazed tile, incidentally, is all one color, Natco Shade 5000 with just a scattered accent colored tiles in the concourses.

At the time this building was under construction there was a lot of adverse publicity in the newspapers in respect to the screen as they felt these would become roosting places for the birds. Happily, this situation has not come about. The best that I can find out, they have not been troubled with this problem at all.

The divisions between the masonry panels, which are visible in the picture, are concrete columns which are pilastered out and form the supporting members for the roof sections which are also concrete. I believe I failed to say that although this building is circular, each of the panels are laid in a flat plane. The General Contractor on this job was Daniel Construction Construction Company and was handled from their office in Jacksonville, Florida.

One of the innovating features of the glazed tile work was the fact that not only was it all one color but there was a minimum amount of fittings involved, which from the construction point of view, simplifies this work no end.

A couple of other little items in conjunction with this construction, the screen tile on the outside was laid up in a buff tinted mortar to match the material, glazed tile was laid up 1.1.6 mortar made up of magnolia slag cement and type "s" lime. The glazed tile was laid in running bond."
