NATIONAL APPRENTICE CONTEST
IN PORTLAND, OREGON, MAY 25-30
WASHINGTON, D. C. The National Brickmason Apprenticeship Contest will be held in Portland, Ore., May 25-30, Thomas F. Murphy, Secretary, B.M.&P.L.U., has announced.
The number of apprentices eligible to participate in the contest, due to lack of space and length of time in which the contest will be held, will be limited to eighty. An apprentice who has been an apprentice for a period longer than two years from the date of his indenture with the International Union up to May 1, 1961, will not be eligible to participate. Names of the contestants must be filed by May 1, 1962.
The winner of the contest shall be selected according to his skill, workmanship and production.
Establish Quality Control
System For Concrete Block
Final steps have been taken by certain participating concrete block manufacturers in California to place in operation a continuous, fool-proof testing program which will assure designers, specifiers, building departments and builders of controlled quality concrete blocks. This announcement was made by William Grindle, Blocklite, Selma, Chairman of the Technical Committee of Concrete Masonry Assn., representing the concrete block industry in California.
Selecting samples and recording basic data is one of the most carefully-controlled steps in the whole procedure. Two sample blocks from each stockpile of every type unit on the job are placed in plastic bags by lab technicians at the jobsite, and transported to the lab to be tested under actual jobsite conditions.
Blocks will, among other things, be tested for compressive strength, moisture content, absorption, shrinkage and tensile strength. All tests are to be performed in accordance with ASTM standards with additional controls in the shrinkage test.
An elaborate and precise system of selection of the units to be tested was established by the Twining Laboratories for the CMA Technical Committee.
There is no possibility of pre-selection of test blocks by the manufacturers. Each participant in the program is telephoned by the laboratory on an unscheduled date and required to name two jobs which blocks were delivered the previous day. Laboratory personnel then will select one of the two locations and pick up the necessary test specimens.

Build Permanent Structures
For California Foundation
In need of year-round quarters at their Malibu, Calif., camp, The Foundation For The Junior Blind launched an ambitious program to seek such permanent buildings. The Masonry Research Program of Los Angeles was asked for assistance, and responded wholeheartedly with the result that the walls for the permanent dormitories and mess hall are up and the buildings are being finished.
The Foundation serves over 400 children in the Los Angeles area. They maintain and operate a program for the children after school and on Saturdays, to teach them to do many things more fortunate kids do as a matter of course.
The year-round buildings were made possible through donations of materials by many people and groups.
Sam Woodleaf, right, explains to two blind children what a concrete block is, and how the blocks are laid into walls to provide them permanent shelters at the Malibu mountain summer camp for blind children operated by the Foundation For Junior Blind, 400 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. The materials were donated by many organizations, individuals and business firms, with Masonry Research, the organization of masonry contractors and bricklayers unions, donating the labor of building the walls of the masonry buildings. Mr. Woodleaf is an officer of the Masonry Research group.
