New Techniques Developed
Pioneering and testing of new techniques in the art of masonry construction, for the good of the community as well as the industry, has been an important part of the activities of Person & Wik, Inc., a major masonry contractor of Northern California, celebrating its 50th anniversary in January 1962.
The High Lift Grouting System was developed and tested in the yard of Person & Wik, Inc., in Burlingame, California, in cooperation with the Masonry Joint Industry of San Francisco, the Clay Brick & Tile Association.

San Francisco, represented by Robert W. Harrington, Manager, and the late Manley W. Sahlberg, Supervising Structural Engineer, California Division of Architecture in San Francisco.
This system was spearheaded and promoted by Oscar F. Person, President of Person & Wik, Inc. This firm has completed $2.5 million of High Lift Grouted masonry to date.
Stanford Research Institute Building is the latest. Other buildings are IBM Building in Oakland; several buildings for Bank of America; San Francisco Federal Savings and Loan Building, six stories high; Pacific Heights Hospital; Plumbers Union #33, Convalescent Home at Clearlake, Lake County, and many others.
Person & Wik, Inc, has developed a system of using precast in tilt-up construction that was used in the new Post Office in Menlo Park, California. Panels as large as 34 feet x 12 feet were installed with complete success, Swanson Construction of Burlingame was the general contractor.

Tru-Vac Vacuum Pad anchors machine to drill 300 holes up to 6" O.D. in 9" extra hard aggregate with 4 to 6 rods per hole.
PROJECT: Methodist Hospital of Central Illinois, Nurses' Dormitory, Peoria, Ill. EQUIPMENT: Truco Model A Portable Diamond Drilling Machine; Truco Tru-Vac Vacuum Pad: Truco Diamond Drill Bits, JOB: drill nearly 300 holes in lift floor slabs 9 thick, extra hard aggregate, heavily reinforced with rods 1 to 134" dia.; most holes had 4 to 6 rods. Holes 2 to 4" for electrical services; 3 to 6 for water, sewer, fire lines.
No anchor holes allowed, no ceiling against which to jack telescoping center column of Truco machine. Contractor used Truco Tru-Vac Vacuum Pad to anchor machine to floor with up to 1000 actual pounds of vacuum. Holes averaged under 20 minutes each including set-up. Write for Bulletin SC-7.
