Tower Type:

The tower-type scaffold produced by Morgen Manufacturing Company was the first commercially available adjustable scaffold other than swing stages. This type of scaffold consists of vertical trussed towers, triangular in cross-section, approximately 10 ft. high which, with extensions and/or inserts added, can be extended to almost any height as long as they are properly braced to the building (Fig. 4). A carriage, which provides the mason and materials platforms, slips over the tower and is raised in small increments by a hand winch suspended by a cable from the top of the tower. The carriage has a maximum of 5 ft. of working platform and a 2 ft. mason's platform which is dropped 22 in. below the materials shelf. The carriage is raised by laborers who operate the winch on the side of the towers away from the masons. Once planking is in place it need never be moved since the carriage can be raised to height of masonry required without replanking. The best procedure is to have the carriage raised every three brick courses or 8 in. which maintains the mason at his most productive working level.

Tubular Type with Adjustable Brackets:

Continuous adjustment for tubular or ring scaffolds is provided by brackets suspended by cables and which slide vertically along the front legs of the frames (Fig. 5). Walk-through type frames 6'6" high are usually used so that laborers can work on their platform and stock the materials shelf. The brackets provide a materials shelf and mason's platform which are both continuously adjustable. The laborers platform from which the material shelf is stocked is stationary and must be replanked at each 6'6" level.

Five companies are now producing adjustable brackets for their tubular scaffolds Safway, who pioneered the development, Patent, Universal, Waco and Automatic Devices.

All three types of adjustable scaffolds described above are for use on relatively large jobs with high walls. Suitable adjustable scaffolds in the one-story residential market are practically non-existent.

Another type of adjustable scaffold recently introduced to the construction trade is the Hoist-O-Matic scaffold (Fig. 6). Corner posts of 2" square steel tubing are framed with trussed side and end braces. The 5' wide materials and laborer platform and a lowered mason's platform are continuously adjustable. A unique feature is a portable winch with which one laborer can raise up to 100 ft. of stage. An added advantage is that all stage plank butt-there is no overlap to cause difficulty in wheeling materials.

HOW TO USE TUBULAR SCAFFOLDS MOST EFFICIENTLY

At present most efforts in the residential field are directed to the most efficient use of tubular or ring scaffolds now used by practically all builders.

To gain the most from readily available equipment, the following procedure is recommended (Figs. 7a and 7b).

Before masons begin work, set up the ring scaffold about 24 in. away from the foundation wall. Then place the scaffold at a point as near 2 ft. above grade as possible and stock masonry materials on this platform (Fig. 7a). Thus, when the masons start work, their materials are all at proper working height. After the first
