Weight of the block: A 12 inch- high block weighs approximately 50% more than an 8 inch-high corresponding width block.
Breakage in cutting: Breakage in cutting on the job appears to be no problem. Block suppliers who were checked stated there had been no undue complaint from masonry people.
Cost of 12 inch-high block: The selling price of a 12 inch-high block over a corresponding width 8 inch-high block falls within the ranger for 3 inch wide blocks of between 5e and 104 more. For the 8 inch wide block, the range appears to fall between 10 and 15 more.
Let's face it. In recent years pre- fabricated panels, tilt up walls, and other products or techniques have been substituted for quality masonry wall construction. Without exception, these products and techniques have been promoted on the basis of an anticipated savings through elimination of the skilled mason and not because the resulting wall was better.
Down through the ages, nothing has surpassed good masonry wall construction for beauty, performance, fire safety and low maintenance. Today, nearly everyone prefers masonry construction.
# The True Cost
The true cost of construction of masonry walls is made up of many factors, some of which are the cost of:
1. The masonry units required to lay a given wall area.
2. Mortar.
3. Scaffolding.
4. The handling of material to the job site and on the job site.
5. The skilled craftsmanship to lay the walls.
6. The labor required to clean down the walls.
In justifying the use of masonry walls, we must retain the advantages of masonry wall construction; i. e., beauty, performance, fire safety, and low maintenance. We must not sacrifice either quality of material of quality of the skilled craftsmanship needed to build these walls. Therefore, we must find ways to produce quality masonry units for less, eliminate waste in handling, decrease the cost (but not the quality) of the mortar and employ skilled masons to insure quality of work without waste.
We have a masonry unit which:
Is acceptable, reliable and economical.
Requires less mortar without sacrificing durabliity or weather tightness of construction.
