Tile and other materials are used in the game and the campus room. For ease of cleaning, all walls of the athletic club are structural glazed tile. Ceramic tile was used in areas of maximum moisture where sanitation is of prime importance. Structural tile was utilized in areas where much traffic would result in high maintenance costs. Salt tile was in some stairs walls and some areas where sanitation is important. Buff wire cut face tile was used where a pleasing appearance and low maintenance was desired, but not in heavy contact areas. Where traffic was lightest, 6 x 16" structural clay tile filled the bill. Many
murals in brick. Below, International officials of the B.M. & P.I.U. of Washington, the Structural Clay Products Institute, and Chosen Contractors Association view close-up of decorative murals on a recent visit to Des Moines for ceremonies commemorating H. C. Bates Day. The officials view a mural depicting YMCA purpose: Understanding among all people.
The 16' x 43' brick mural depicts youth holding the YMCA triangle representing development of "spirit, mind and body," from which emanates the flame of light, truth and guidance. Bricklayers, members of the Local No. 2 of the B.M. & P.I.U., donated their time to place the mural bricks.
They have wire cut face brick, easily cleaned, giving a good appearance even after years of service. Extensive external use of masonry to achieve a quintessence of beauty is the eye-catching highlight of the building. Various murals depicting scenes of classic pose and intent adorn the low-level building adjacent to the YMCA. Bricklayers, members of Local No. 2 of B. M. & P. I. U. of A., donated their time to lay the mural.
Des Moines Y is another testimony of the role of masonry in meeting the flexible needs of our time.

TRUCO
DOES IT AGAIN!
Easily Drills 20" Holes
Through Reinforced Concrete
and Blacktop
PROJECT: Farmers' & Merchants'
Bank, Los Angeles,
EQUIPMENT: Truco Model G mobile drilling machine, gasoline engine powered. Truco Diamond Drill Bits. JOB: drill 28 holes of 18 and 20" diameter with 2" radius at each corner (to "square off" the holes) for the placement of steel beams. This required 112 holes 4" in diameter. Core drilling was specified because it is clean and quiet and would not interfere with routine in the lower level parking area below. Ed Dempsey, owner of Concrete Coring Co., L.A., contracted to do the job. Although repeatedly warned against attempting to drill the 18 and 20 holes in a single cut, he accepted the recommendations of Foremost Drilling Co., L.A., used a Truco Model G mobile diamond drilling machine and Truco drill bits and completed the 140 holes without a hitch in 30 working days, including set-up time. Dempsey reports "We did the job with time to spare and at our estimated profit." Write for Bulletin SC-4.
