Minimizes Effloresence, Stain
A new silicone-based liquid solution which acts as a water repellent, and which also minimizes effloresence and staining of building masonry and brick, has been developed by Delta Plastics, Inc., Anderson, S. C., manufacturers of building supplies. Called "Silicone Afterwash No. 44," it is a caustic solution based on Union Carbide's R-20 water repellent, a sodium methyl silanolate, and is designed to prevent staining of building exteriors by water or oil carried dirt.
The solution is said to be especially effective in combating effloresence in pastel or red brick which, according to research, has a tendency in itself to be on the acid side, thus aggravating the chemical reaction causing effloresence. Applied by hand spray to give even distribution, one gallon of afterwash makes five gallons of solution which will cover approximately five hundred square feet.
Prior to applying the afterwash, the company recommends that a detergent type masonry cleaner be used to clean the wall. Particularly effective for this purpose is Delta Plastic's brick cleaner No. 22, a detergent type masonry cleaner designed for quick efficient cleaning of red and burr brick, concrete block, field stone, hard-burned tile, and many other types of masonry units. Mixed with clean water, one gallon of dilute material cleans approximately 100 square feet of masonry.
Silicone Afterwash No. 44 is being marketed at present by Plastics, Inc., along with the masonry cleaner, through building supply houses located in the south, southeast and the New England states.
