BRICK PANELS

WESTERN STYLE
A new and different approach to brick panels was developed for use in the Sermons From Science Building at the Seattle World's Fair by the Builders Brick Co., Seattle. For a full report on the latest in prefabrication, Masonry brings you this picture presentation.

Using prefabricated brick panels, architects Johnson, Nesland & Sibold designed the Sermons From Science Building at Seattle Worlds Fair for maximum portability. Realizing that after the six month Fair the structure must be either demolished or removed, they set about to use a brick panel design which would allow the building to be taken apart and re-erected elsewhere.

Using 102 panels, the largest of which contained 78 square feet, the architect devised a method for placing brick between two six inch wide flange columns. The joints were shimmed and mortared. The panels are first wedged outward and angle iron clips bolted through the web of the column to hold them in place. A neoprene gasket is used to seal the brick panel and the column, and a similar gasket is also used on the steel clips to allow for any irregularity of the brick surface.

The panels were fabricated at the Builders Brick Co. Newcastle plant by D. V. Klier of Seattle, Washington. The sequence of photos shows the various panel construction, handling and installation. Panel installation at the job site was handled by Hatcher & Hatcher, Seattle, Washington.
