Featured here are the winning entries in the second annual Washington, D. C. Architectural Awards Program sponsored by the Masonry Institute, Inc. The jury consisting of Paul Schweikher and Percival Goodman selected the buildings for their achievement in excellence in architectural design through the use of masonry materials.
Honorable Mention in the Public Building Group was the Agudas Achim Synagogue. Designed by the architectural firm of Brown, Chapman, Miller & Wright and constructed by the General & Mason Contracting firm of Cannon Co., Alexandria, Va.
The Capitol Park Apartments, Section III, First Place winner. Saterless & Smith, Weston, D. C., were the Architects with Hurstruction Corporation the general contractor. MCAA member Anthony Izzo Company, Washington, D. C. was the Mason Contractor. The facing material is a unique application of masonry units hexagonal clay units with matching hexagonal solar screen units. This presented an unusual problem for the mason contractor, but as the photographs show he complied with great skill.
