He saved in layout by eliminating dry bonding. Once the first two courses are laid, the bond is established. At this point on the mason should be able to follow the quite closely. However, because the work will usually be overhand, it is difficult to check vertical alignment of head joints. By using the marked line he can check his bonding with the red marks on the line which occur every three brick. A quick check on alternate courses in this manner will assure better looking work and will eliminate the necessity of breaking the brick-mortar bond at three or four units when the closure unit does not fit.

A method of laying brick included in the original recommendations for the "SCR masonry process" offers additional possibilities of increasing production, lowering labor costs and will assure full head and bed joints. This method is the "shoved-joint" technique.

As long a bed of mortar as working conditions will allow is thrown on the wall. This mortar bed is not furrowed, but is left with the center of the bed fairly high. Then each brick is shoved into place. The shoving movement positions the brick and, when properly done, fills the head joint completely, with mortar oozing out of the sides and top. The technique can be used by one man, or by a team in which one man spreads mortar and the other shoves the brick into place. Actual job applications of this technique have proven that increased production and completely filled head and bed joints result from its use.

Including the scaffold systems to be discussed later, the "SCR masonry process" can afford real economies in the masonry work. If the tools are properly used by the masons, labor cost savings of up to 25 to 30 per cent can be achieved.
