Liam R. Connors, 1st vice president of the Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers International Union of America, Washington, D. C., was emphatic in his talk on "Responsibility of the Craftsman" that no strikes will occur on government defense projects.

Two awards for outstanding masonry buildings erected in Utah in 1963 were presented at the annual masonry conference. One award went to Guild Masonry Co. for the outstanding residential building, a bluff-faced split-block home at 2354 Cottonwood Lane, Salt Lake City. Arthur Guild received the award from Conference Chairman Stanley N. Child. The second award went to Wesley Wright, for outstanding commercial or public building, for the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention made of brick.

Masonry Cutting, Question & Answer Corner

"Fishtails" serve a useful purpose as they support the diamonds, keeping them from being torn out of the matrix as long as possible.

When the blade is reversed, these supporting "fishtails" are quickly worn away and cannot support the diamond particles to the maximum extent. This accelerates the moment when the diamonds are worn away and a new layer is exposed.

Reversing the blade frequently, therefore, does keep the blade dressed and at maximum sharpness, but blade life is appreciably reduced.

Another inquiry was received from Mr. K. C. of Junction City, Kansas, who wrote:

QUESTION: "I have used several types of diamond blades but have never received what I feel is an adequate number of cuts from any of them. Masons that I have talked with from time to time seem to get a lot more use out of their diamond blades than I do. Either that or they're stretching their results quite a bit. Are there some specific points I could look at with a point to improving my diamond blade performance?"

ANSWER: There are many reasons why a diamond blade may wear excessively fast thereby reducing life and not allowing you to get as many cuts as you feel you should. Many pages could be written on this subject but here are some of the most common reasons.

1. Make sure the blade you are using is actually meant for the material you are cutting. A blade specifically designed to cut glazed tile will wear out excessively fast if used on concrete block, or other coarse, groggy materials.

2. Operator carelessness or negligence could be contributing to excessive rate of wear. Bumping blade into the material will cause flat spots which in turn will result in excessively rapid wear.

3. Improper voltage, insufficient power will cause the saw to lose speed and stall. Both conditions reduce blade life considerably.

4. Inadequate water supply will cause diamond blades to wear excessively fast. A serious lack of water will cause blades to "burn up."

5. Poor operating condition of your saw, including worn bearings, belt slippage, worn blade collars, out of alignment condition, improper conveyor cart operation. Any or all of these factors would result in excessive diamond blade wear. There are others, but a check of these items will usually uncover the culprit.
