Van Cleve Elementary School
Whether the new addition to the east of Van Cleve Elementary School would be known as Space Architecture because of the suspension into space or because of the provided for both educational purposes as well as ground facilities, the building, regardless, is unique in character. The Board of Education has shown by this a progressive approach to the utilization of land in a congested city area.
The basic structure of the building is reinforced concrete structure, particularly molded to an interesting aesthetic form to work in a unified design with the masonry enclosing walls. The exterior glazed brick of blue spots adds harmony to the contrasting gray-buff brick, east and face. The east stairs carries out the floating theme appearing to be suspended as a descend to the grade.

This was originally a panel building yet through the efforts of the Masonry Contractor, Lonie & Son, Inc., Dayton, the School Board was offered an alternate of glazed brick in stack bond panels.
What did it do? It saved the Dayton, Ohio, Board of Education $9.200 and provided over 800 man hours of work for the bricklayers. The original designed would have offered only 60 hours of work for the local craftsmen.
The space below the Multi-purpose Wing permits complete playground unhampered by building construction as well as night time parking for activities which may prevail in the Auditorium-Gymnasium Unit.
The interior of the Multi-purpose Rooms uses veneered panels in contrast with speckled glazed brick to enhance the stage. The ceiling is corrugated aluminum with colors of persimmon at the mercury vapor lights. The Multi-purpose Room provides, as well as stage facilities, a regulation basketball court plus two practice courts when folding bleachers have been closed.
