days. This resulted in a savings in both materials and manpower. The roof of the third floor pen was put in place three days after the walls were fitc. Kenneth W. Miller, executive director of Denver High United Fund, felt the high strength mortar with Sarabond liquid polymer was an important ac to the new building. "As a non-profit organiz Miller said, "We are forced to a low-cost constr budget. Our estimated constructed costs are approx ly one-half those of some other Denver building. I feel the new mortar was one of several components enabled us to build a new headquarters of the quality at a minimum cost."

above the footings, then a 6-inch masonry wall f next 4 feet to the sill and then 4 inches from sill roof line.

"We realized before starting that the biggest am we could make in this construction was to ha entire wall be 4 inches thick from foundation to," explains Brockbank, "but since codes prevented th were limited to an 8-foot-high section of the 4-inch thickness. The earthquake, plus engineering tests, conclusively that we can go 4 inches all the way an a safe, efficient wall."

The exterior walls were only five days old wh 5.7 Richter scale quake hit Salt Lake City and were ly unsupported as they weathered the shock. "Ou were on top of the walls fitting the plate members the quake struck and all exterior supports had be moved," said project manager Steve Smith. "Th got off in a hurry and then watched the wall sw the branches of a tree without cracking or dam any sort."

The interiors of the exterior walls of the 2800- foot house were installed under the second experi phase of the FHA program. Using Dow's Miller S a one-inch thickness of Styrofoam polystyrene foa applied directly to the brick surfaces with portland mortar. Gypsum board of 3/8-inch thickness wa applied to the Styrofoam insulation with Styrot hesive, which eliminated the need for conventional.

By combining the two experimental systems Salt Lake City house, Brockbank was able to pro total wall thickness of 5 3/8-inch on the top floor split-level, thus reducing the wall 3 inches from the thickness.

"The space we gain is sufficient to provide an ado half-bath or large storage closet in the floor plan," Brockband. "But the biggest savings and possibila this system are yet to come. We feel this is anoth toward the complete 4-inch brick wall from fou to plate and the eventual prefabrication of such with lightweight brick. In Salt Lake City, due to v conditions, we can lay brick only at certain times year. When this system is perfected we will be lay brick all year long in our shop and deliver the to the site for bonding together duirng the warmest of the day," Brockbank forecasts. "We might als the insulation and drywall to the brick panels in th and thus would be delivering a complete interior-c wall system to the building site for faster assem. MASONRY April
