Far Right: When the strength of an elastomeric sealant exceeds the tensile strength of the masonry, the joint edge may be pulled off when the sealant necks down.
Right: Joints in concrete stadiums are frequently a problem as too few, of inadequate width, are usually provided. Here the joints have closed completely, forcing out all the mastic sealant.
Shape Factor In Joint Design
(continued from page 11) and, in the case of pavements, traffic will flatten the sealant. Then since the volume of the mastic will be reduced by the amount squeezed out, the joint will eventually fail from a shortage of material, in succeeding cycles of extension and compression.
Improving existing joints
Existing joints can be rebuilt to conform to recent findings. The shape and size of joints can be changed so that the shape factors will be suitable. If the joint slot is too deep, the excess depth may be filled with an inert material such as neoprene or polyurethane foam, or non-extruding cork.
Only the upper part of the joint will be left open to receive the sealant. The width of the joint may be enlarged by cutting out a wider slot and filling the opening with a sealant. See Fig. 8. Two state highway departments are using this technique to rebuild old joints in concrete pavements with very satisfactory results.
