Limestone Industry Sales Up
The year 1963 will go down in history as a great year for Indiana limestone. This year the famous building stone industry reversed a 35-year downtrend in sales. It stopped a shorter-term, 8-year slide. Until 1963 the industry could count on about $1 million lower gross take each year. Conservative estimates predict total 1963 sales of $36 million-plus, up a whopping $3 million from the 1962. More important to the fabricating mills over that nation, architectural cut (to size) stone sales account for nearly all of this increase, toting up to nearly 30% over 1962 sales of about $10 million.

Large panels of stock bond, red Roman brick, separated by windows and bands of concrete were utilized in the Madison Inn, recently awarded one of five 1963 citation distinguished architecture in a competition sponsored by the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The Madison Inn was designed by Tannenbaum & Koehnen, architects and engineers of Milwaukee. The importance of the brick panels in the building's design is apparent in the jury's comment that the structure shows a simple and logical use of structure and materials. The same brick paneling is used for a fireplace wall, a distinctive feature of the Madison Inn lobby. Another feature of the Madison Inn is a brick surfaced terrace opening off the main entrance. Actually, the terrace roofs a section of the buildings's underground parking facilities. The six story, $900,000 motor hotel contains 75 guest rooms, meeting rooms and a restaurant. Parking for 60 cars is provided on the basement level.

Horizon Homes Competition
1963 Award Winners Named
A Tampa, Florida builder-architect team marked an historic first in the three-year-old Concrete Industries Horizon Homes competition by capturing the top national awards in both the design and merchandising categories. In previous years these honors had been taken by architects and builders of separate homes.

Mark Hampton, the winning architect, and Sunstate Builders, Inc., will be awarded a trip for two to a place in the world.

Highlight of the double prize winning house, located in the Carrollwood section of Tampa, is a designed separation of living areas which permits children and adults to enjoy complete freedom of individual expression. Their paths need not cross except when dining or mutually enjoying the facilities of the family room.
