A New Face In Chicago

In the heart of Chicago's famous financial district a beautiful new structure is rising. It is the addition of the Northern Trust Company, nationally known banking firm, located at 50 South LaSalle Street.

The steel skeleton is fast acquiring a facade of Rockville granite which will make it the show place of the Street. This photo review indicates in brief some of the techniques used by the contractor in installing this material.

A typical slab of granite, 13 feet long, 3 feet wide and 8 inches thick weighs approximately 5,600 pounds. On the lower floors, one through three, slabs 19 feet long were used. When completed over 4,500,000 tons of granite covering 91,000 square feet will enclose the bank addition.

Primarily self-supporting, the granite slabs are attached to the structure by means of shelf-angles. Here's a slab on its way up-watch now and see how the bricklayers do it.
