WORLD'S LARGEST SHOPPING CENTER COMPLETED
Dallas, Texas-North Park Shopping Center, first featured in the March issue, is now in operation. Authorities report that this is the largest shopping center in the world since it houses over 1,300,000 square feet of retail shopping and mall area. It is fully air conditioned on five different levels. The owner and developer is Raymond D. Nasher. The General Contractor is Henry C. Beck Co., Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Goath masonry work by MCAA Member Dee Brown Masonry, Inc., Dallas, Texas. The architects on the center, except the Neiman-Marcus Store, are Harrell & Hamilton, Dallas, Texas. Neiman-Marcus was designed by Eero Saarinen & Associates (see front cover). Over 4,000,000 face brick are used in this project and approximately 10 miles of stone coping were utilized. In addition 1,800,000 light-weight concrete block were installed. Of interest are the lower sections of the walls on the cover photo. These walls look like they have pilasters at each corner, however, closer inspection will reveal that radius brick have been used.

Construction To Reach All-Time High

John F. Hallman, Jr., has been elected President of the National Association of Distributors and Dealers of Structural Clay Products. Other officers elected are: Henri Bastien, Vice President; George Stellrecht. Vice President; George Hays, Treasurer; and James Holman, Secretary.


# SKIL OPENS NEW CENTERS

Skil Corporation, Chicago-based power tool manufacturer, has announced the opening of new factory service centers in Norfolk, Virginia; Tampa, Florida; and Omaha, Nebraska. Each is equipped with Skil's electronic tool testing center along with a complete stock of parts and accessories to service Skil's do-it-yourself, industrial and automotive lines of power tools.

Construction expenditures in the U.S. will grow by 4.5 percent in 1966, rising to an all-time high of nearly $71 billion, according to a new forecast prepared for the Market Research Department of Fortune. The biggest percentage growth will take place in hospital and institutional construction and in industrial building. Both of the categories will gain over their 1965 levels by more than 8 percent.

Construction of one and two-family nonfarm dwellings, a major factor in the industry, will be very strong next year after being in the doldrums since 1963. The report released by Fortune looks for a 5.4 percent gain in dollar volume, carrying it close to $20.4 billion, although the number of housing units started will remain close to this year's level.

The over-all increase in construction that the Fortune study anticipates for next year will be almost half (continued on page 13)
