CPM in Construction Management: Scheduling by the Critical Path Method by James J. O'Brien, Professional Engineer. 249 pages plus index: 185 illustrations; 6 x 9; McGraw-Hill: $10.75. Publication date: March, 1965.

"CPM in Construction Management" is a practical and instructive volume which discusses the Critical Path Method in logical terms using examples, case histories, sample problems, and questions and answers.

The author presents a non-complex picture of what CPM is then shows how to compute it. Next, he explains, in laymen's terms, the operation of the electronic computer and discusses its role in CPM. This discussion includes the actual steps one would take in his own CPM planning from preparation of the basic CPM plan through interpretation of the computed results.

The nineteen chapters of the book are arranged for optimum self-study - each new idea is presented only after the groundwork for it has been carefully prepared.

James J. O'Brien, director of the recently organized Society of CPM Consultants has applied CPM and PERT on a full time basis since 1960. In addition to teaching CPM and PERT to constructors and engineers, he has supervised its applications to schools, hospitals, high-rise, utilities, site work, highways, electronic installations, city planning, refinery turnarounds, and ship construction. Many articles by O'Brien have been published, and he has addressed many groups in industry.

Surveying Manual by Louis C. Ripo, & Associates, Ltd., Livingston, New Jersey. 125 pages plus index: 51 illustrations; 5 x 7 McGraw-Hill. $5.95. Publication date: December, 1964.

"Surveying Manuel" is a manual of standard practice for surveying which outlines procedures to be followed and instruments used in making many types of surveys required for highway, route, and bridge surveys. The author has coordinated the material in a way which permits field and office personnel to have a complete understanding of the information transmitted to a design office, thereby facilitating and expediting the preparation of plans.

Handy in format and size, the book enables the surveyor to keep adequate, reliable, and understandable notes. It provides a means of communication between the non-professional manager, and professional grown away from surveying, and the surveyor.
