Construction Estimating and Job Preplanning
by George E. Deatherage, P.E., George E. Deatherage & Son, Construction Consultants, Satsuma, Florida. 302 pages plus index: 120 illustrations, 7-1/4 x 9-7/8; McGraw-Hill; $14.50. Publication date: June, 1965.

"Construction Estimating and Job Preplanning" presents the most advanced techniques of estimating the cost of construction projects. It emphasizes the importance of accurately predetermining the order and cost of the methods to be used in constructing a project. By "methods," the author means that combination of men and machines selected to perform each specific part of the work to be done.

George E. Deatherage's professional career encompasses 55 years in the construction business. He started as an axeman at the age of 16 on a railroad location in Minnesota and worked his way up. He has been employed by H. K. Ferguson C of Cleveland as Superintendent; as General Superintendent of industrial plant design, engineering, and construction; Carbide and Chemical Corporation, a division of Union Carbide, as General Superintendent of Construction; D. Russell of Richmond, Virginia; and R. F. Ball Construction Company of Houston, Texas. He also operated his own company in Baltimore and remained a partner in it until he moved to Florida in 1956. Deatherage now heads George E. Deatherage & Son, Construction Consultants in Satsuma, Florida.

McGraw-Hill has also published Deatherage's "Construction Office Administration," and "Construction Company Organization and Management." Another book, tentatively titled "Construction Scheduling and Control," will be published later this year.

Deterioration, Maintenance, and Repair of Structures by Sidney M. Johnson, plus index: 188 illustrations; 6 x 9; McGraw-Hill $10.50. Publication date: August, 1965.

"Deterioration, Maintenance, and Repair of Structures" describes the types of deterioration which occur in structures; their cause; measures to be observed in controlling construction; measures of preventive maintenance to be considered while the structure is in service; and methods for effecting repairs.

Although the problems of deterioration which are described in the book are very common, their extent, even the fact of their occurrence, is not widely known. Moreover, according to the author, many of these problems result from some oversight-often minor-in design or construction and could be prevented if the designer, construction man, or maintenance engineer were aware of their potential occurrence.

"Deterioration, Maintenance, and Repair of Structures" is an invaluable reference for every design, construction, and maintenance engineer who deals with structures, since the problems included are so common that they must sooner or later come within the work of all such persons.

Further information on "Deterioration, Maintenance, and Repair of Structures" may be obtained from the McGraw-Hill Book Information Service, 327 West 41st Street, New York, New York 10036.
