New Multi-Million Dollar Plant
Start of construction of a new multi-million dollar cement plant at Orange, Texas, was announced recently by Alpha Portland Cement Company.
The Texas-Louisiana area to be served by the new 2.4 million-barrel-a-year plant was described by the company as "one of the fastest growing cement consuming regions in the country."
A construction contract has been awarded to Blount Brothers, Inc. of Montgomery, Ala. The new plant will be operated by Alpha's Texas Portland Cement Co. division, which currently runs a small 700,000 barrel-a-year facility at the site. Texas Portland Cement Co. was acquired by Alpha in 1962 for $4.5 million.
When completed in early 1967, the new Orange plant will be "the most modern cement producing facility in the Gulf Coast area," said R. S. Gerstell, board chairman. It will, for example, contain the industry's first solid-state electronic control panel, as well as other highly automated and advanced equipment.
