MINNEAPOLIS MASONRY ESTIMATING COURSE

MCAA's Masonry Estimating Course journeyed to Minneapolis during the early part of January where over 50 representatives of masonry firms attended. Top center photo shows Edward LeJeune, featured lecturer for the course, explaining some of his estimating techniques. Others, left to right, are: Donald Frantz, Minnesota State Chairman, Lejeune; Ernest Olson, President of the MCAA Minneapolis Chapter; and Robert Harrison, MCAA Education Committee. Other photos show registrants during a luncheon break. Since this course, MCAA has also conducted in the Minneapolis area, a Course of Concrete Estimating at which approximately 40 persons attended.

NEW WITHHOLDING TAX BOOK TO BE ISSUED

Due to contemplated changes in the Federal Withholding Tax it will be necessary to re-issue the 1966 Tables. These will now be entitled "New 1966 FEDERAL GRADUATED WITHHOLDING TAX TABLES." Every employer will need these new Tables with the concise explanation to help comply with the new graduated withholding requirements. Ten separate official "wage bracket" withholding tables for both single and married employees for weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, monthly and daily or miscellaneous payroll periods are computed and reproduced. Also included will be the rates needed to compute withholding for those employers who use the percentage method. Still another table covers social security-medicare withholding. These books are another service of the MCAA. Additional copies will be $2.50 per copy.

HOLD ANNUAL MEETING

Perlite Institute named Richard S. Funk president at the international association's 17th annual meeting in Mexico City. He was formerly administrative secretary of Perlite Institute and is presently manager of the Building Products Department of the Mining and Mineral Products Division of Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.

Elected directors were Herman O. Freudenberg, president of Persolite Products, Inc., Denver, and Theron L. Lehr, president of Texas Lightweight Products Co. of Irving, Texas. Richard E. Barnes, managing director of Perlite Institute, was re-elected to the Board. The directors serve two year terms.

Dr. Carl Vander Linden, research director of the Celite Division of Johns-Manville Products Corporation discussed research and development as a profit-making tool. "The product life cycle curve applies equally to large and small companies. If you do not bring out new products or new uses, you will be making less profit ten years from now than you are today."

He cited three avenues available to smaller companies to develop new products: Effective research and development assistance through association efforts such as Perlite Institute's program which developed silicon treated perlite loose fill insulation through independent research laboratories, and through university consultants.

Other speakers discussed changes in the markets now being served by the perlite industry and suggested effective marketing methods to take advantage of those changes.

The Mexico City meeting marks the first activity conducted by Perlite Institute outside the U.S. Member companies from 15 states, Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Spain attended.
