Construction, namely all-weather construction regardless of rain, snow or extremely cold weather. Construction shut-down due to cold weather causes hardships on everyone, but mostly the owner. Mr. Moratschek pointed out that when the owner makes up his mind about a building he would like to have it "tomorrow" and every effort should be made to give it to him "tomorrow". Much more could be done to do just this. He emphasized what winter protection will do for the Owner, Architect, General Contractor and Sub-Contractor by cutting down cost of idle personnel, labor foremen or various craft foremen and letting expensive equipment stand idle rather than being used. Unemployment Insurance could be cut down which is a sizable amount of money every year. An owner can definitely benefit by occupying his building on a scheduled date and arranging dates for occupancy of his tenants. A definite moving date means dollars in the owner's pocket. As far as the architect is concerned, his overhead will be reduced because less time is needed for supervision.

All of this can be accomplished by setting up meetings between the architect, general contractor and sub-contractor to decide what winter protection will be needed for continuous work. Time and material costs could then be made and presented to the owner, but with the definite understanding that the owner pays now but will benefit later.

Jim Socrates of Cincinnati Shaper Co., a Project Manager, explained what winter protection will do for the owner. Mr. Socrates gave his favorable views with the owner's welfare in mind. In summary, he compiled all the advantages of "Winter Protection" emphasizing how little the cost really amounts to the owner.

After the closing of Mr. Moratschek's and Mr. Socrates's speech, a film entitled "Winter Construction-It Can Be Done" was shown. This film shows what has been done in Canada during cold weather.

An enthusiastic question and answer period followed the formal presentation for approximately twenty minutes.

"Concepts In Clay"

"Concepts In Clay", a new motion picture dramatizing the applications, beauty, structural versatility, and new trends in the use of brick and tile, is now available for showings to community and professional groups throughout the nation. Produced by SCPI with the assistance of the Allied Masonry Council, "Clay" has a running time of 27 minutes. It was produced in 16mm color, with voice and musical score, and serves as a fitting sequel to "Clay and Craftmanship", made earlier by AMC with production financed by the BM&PIU. (While "Craftsmanship" focuses on the bricklayer, "Concepts" does the same thing for the material itself.

The film was shot in Chicago, Ill.; Waukegan, Ill.; Canton, Ohio; St. Louis, Mo.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Washington, D.C.; Reston, Va.; and in London and Birmingham, England; Copenhagen, Denmark; Barcelona, Spain; and Zurich, Switzerland. It opens with various scenes that show how brick throughout history has been used to "build the old... the new... the quaint... the distinguished. It has been used to walk on...to hold things up... to make things interesting. Designers have used brick to recapture the past... to preserve it... to extend its values in new and different forms

The story goes on to show how designers have used brick to capture and express different moods, how patterns and textures are used to create a human scale in large buildings, how modern load-bearing design techniques were developed abroad and have come to America, and how, in many other ways, history has begun to repeat itself in the uses being made of brick today in new towns and cities.
