Self-sufficient Apartment Community

The largest outdoor shrine in the United States is on a 200-acre site located between Belleville, Illinois and St. Louis on Highway 460. This is the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.

On an eleven-acre hilltop, within sight of the Saarinen Arch, the Oblate Fathers of Mary Immaculate are building a non-sectarian apartment community that will house 250 senior citizens, age 62 and over. Occupancy is scheduled for this fall.

Intended as a completely self-sufficient, small city, the apartment community consists of 150 units, most of them single-story cottages which are grouped around landscaped courtyards connected to a centrally located five-story building. This central building will offer recreational facilities on the ground floor, and 64 small apartments on the upper floors.

The architectural firm of Hellmuth, Obata, & Kassabaum designed the community to meet the specific needs of people who wished to enjoy to the fullest, their retiring years. According to the architects, the nature of the structures suggested the use of clay products for walls and corridors. The job contractor was Bauer Brothers Construction Company, Inc. of Belleville.

According to the masonry contractor, Harvey Lippert Son, Inc., also of Belleville, 14,000 sq. ft. of exterior wall (4 in. brick, 2½ in. cavity, 6 in. structural clay tile) was insulated with 700 bags of Zonolite's Water-Repellent Caviculite Masonry Fill Insulation. Interior walls are made up of four and eight inch tiles alternated for maximum strength. Foundations are 12-inch longitudinal bearing walls of structural clay tile on concrete slab. Concrete columns and beams support the first floor. Floors are poured-in-place concrete slabs.

The central building and surroundings contain facilities for shuffleboard, croquet, lawn bowling, horseshoes, and billiards. There is also a library, heated pool, sun deck, lounges, hobby shops, arts and crafts rooms, canteen, sewing and card rooms. An auditorium will be available for social events, movies, plays, lectures, and chapel. A beauty salon and barber shop will also be provided.

A monthly life care charge takes care of three meals daily, flat linen service, maid service, maintenance, use of automatic laundry facilities, cultural, social, hobby, and recreational areas, as well as medical and surgical services.

The self-sufficient community will be graced by a system of courtyard and exterior gardens to further complement the atmosphere of a gracious and leisurely-paced life. Sheltered passageways will enable tenants to travel to all parts of the complex during inclement weather.

Five different apartment styles are available from the studio apartment suitable for the individual, to the two-bedroom, two bath suite. Prices range from $8,900 to $24,000. Each apartment comes equipped with wall-to-wall carpeting, draperies, individually controlled heating and air-conditioning, and kitchenettes complete with refrigerator, range, disposal, and storage cabinets.

An overall photo of the huge stone masonry wall that encompasses the Bell Helicopter Office Building for the New Transmission Building, Highway 350, one mile North of Six Flags Inn, Ft. Worth, Texas. The stone well is 32 in. thick at the base tapering down to 18 in. at the top. Approximately 700 tons of mass stone were trucked over 100 miles to the project site.
