The Cannery

The Cannery, nearing completion, is destined to be another bright page of San Francisco's historical past come-to-life. The charm of brick masonry will be everywhere.

General Contractor: Greystone Builders
Mason Contractor: William A. Rainey & Son

San Francisco is a city of brick. Brick built her and rebuilt her. It paved her streets and lined her water cisterns.

The earliest bricks were brought in by Clipper Ships which used them for ballast on return trips from the Orient. By 1900 San Francisco had grown to where she was "The City' to everyone west of St. Louis. When earthquake and fire flattened her in 1906, little remained but the charred bones of buildings whose tombstones were the gutted brick shells.

A few sturdy structures were saved. The old Del Monte Fruit Cannery at the foot of Columbus Avenue (Please turn page)
