Education In The Round
Project: Washington Elementary School, Vancover, Washington
Mason Contractor: George W. Storey, MCAA
Architect: William Donald Cassady
Using a new concept in school design, architect William Donald Cassady has captured the imagination of the Vancouver, Washington, School Board. Utilizing load bearing masonry walls and a circular form a highly functional structure was created that is practical and attractive.
The building is composed of five clusters attached to the outer edge of a doughnut shaped central office area. Each of the four separate classroom clusters has three rooms which may be joined or separated from each other by moveable walls. The fifth cluster contains the multi-purpose and kitchen facilities.
The exterior walls, as well as the corridors and partition walls, are constructed of eight inch hollow clay tile (Please turn to page 39)
Aerial view shows the cluster plan developed by architect Wm. Donald Cassady. Wide overhangs provide extra protection from the elements and serve to enhance the beauty of the structure.
