Education In The Round

(Continued from page 13) with a face dimension of 4 x 12 inches. For economy concrete blocks were used above the ceiling line. A special lintel unit was devised for use over the windows and doors. Reinforcing consisted of reinforcing bars 16 in. on center in the vertical and wall reinforcement in the horizontal joint. Approximately 120,000 clay and concrete units were used. Consultant personnel of the School Plant Planning Division of Washington State Board of Education, are now recommending this facility to state local school planners as "representing the best that is known about the art and science of planning facilities to accommodate programs of elementary school instruction."

Above finished ceiling height concrete masonry units were used. Approximately 120,000 clay and concrete masonry units were used in the project.

Eight inch through-the-wall clay tile units comprise the wall structure. Reinforcing and Type M mortar were used in conformity with local building codes.

Heavy laminated wood beams were used in the multi-purpose room. The exposed clay tile make an attractive wall surfacing that has low maintenance factor.

Special lintel units were used above the door and window openings. This view is from the circular open courtyard. 52,500 persons were killed and 4,400,000 injured in traffic accidents last year according to a report from The Travelers Insurance Companies. The survey showed that alcohol was a contributing factor in more than half of all fatal accidents. Good weather is no safeguard against traffic accidents. A report by The Travelers Insurance Companies points out that 80 percent of the 52,500 traffic deaths in 1966 occurred in clear, dry weather.
