Prepared by ACI Committee 311, the new fifth edition of the ACI Manual of Concrete Inspection provides up-to-date information on settlement of concrete, proportioning of lightweight concrete, determination of yield, shoring and formwork, strength requirements, cold weather concreting, shotcrete, and editorial revisions throughout the text of the previous edition.
Included in the appendix of this new edition is the full text of the ACI standard, "Recommended Practice for Concrete Inspection" (ACI 311-64). Based on information from many sources, organizations, and individuals, ACT's Manual of Concrete Inspection describes methods of inspecting concrete which are generally accepted as good practice. Besides supplementing specifications, ACT's Manual of Concrete Inspection is intended as a guide in matters not covered by the specifications.
The manuscript was originally prepared by Joe W. Kelly, and was revised over a period of years to achieve a first edition in 1941 acceptable to a substantial majority of the committee's critic members. Members made important contributions, and the entire chapter on "Fundamentals of Concrete" was written by T. C. Powers. The second edition, also in 1941, included a number of corrections and minor revisions. The third edition in 1955 incorporated many of the constructive suggestions received from users; in its preparation several members of the committee undertook the revision of entire chapters. The fourth edition in 1957 brought up to date those sections of the manual dealing with mix proportioning, winter concreting, and hot weather concreting as well as general editorial revisions throughout the text.
Enlarged from 240 to 270 pages, this manual appears with attractive blue-green cloth covers. For convenience, it is still of the pocket size and retains the general arrangements of its earlier editions.
Copies may be purchased from the Publications Department, American Concrete Institute, P.O. Box 4754, Detroit, Michigan 48219. Price $4.00; to ACI members $2.00.
# New Grace Plant
W. R. Grace & Co.'s Zonolite Division is serving west coast outlets from its new Dyfoam polystyrene plant at Vernon, California near Los Angeles. The 11,000 square-foot facility features molded board processing equipment capable of turning out Zonolite's full line of polystyrene insulations.
The California plant has 10,000 square feet of outdoor storage space which will help the firm keep pace with increasing Dyfoam sales. The new facility is Zonolite's sixth Dyfoam producing plant, and its first on the west coast.
Polystyrene cutting plants have been established in St. Louis, New Orleans, Baltimore Milwaukee, Little Rock, Houston, Easthampton, Massachusetts, and Modesto, California to help speed distribution.
