Construction firms being canvassed in the census will receive forms by mail early in 1968 (to obtain data covering 1967). Completion of these questionnaires is required under terms of an Act of Congress (13 U.S. Code). All answers on the census questionnaires are confidential and are used only to produce statistics. Such statistics will be presented for each kind of business and for the Nation as a whole and for States, as well as for other geographic areas.
Social Security Changes
The recent change in the social security law provides an increase in monthly benefits of at least 13 per cent beginning with February, 1968.
The wage base on which social security taxes are paid has also been changed from a maximum of $6600 to $7800. However, the tax rate in 1968 is still 4.4 percent, the same as in 1967. A worker earning $6600 (or less) a year will pay exactly the same amount of social security taxes in 1968 as he paid in 1967. In 1969 and 1970, the tax rate will be increased to 4.8 percent. These contribution rates also include the portion he pays toward medicare protection at age 65.
Higher social security contributions are scheduled for the one out of four wage earners who earns over $6600. He will be paying social security contributions on up to $1200 more of his annual earnings.
For a worker earning the maximum of $7800 or more a year, this will mean additional social security contributions of $52.80 in 1968, rising to a maximum additional contribution of $7.28 per month in 1987 and later, including the amount he pays for his and his wife's hospital insurance under medicare. These higher paid workers who will be paying substantially more in social security contributions are, however, the ones who will also get substantially higher benefits, ranging up to 30 percent higher than under present law.
