MCAA Executive Board Meets
The MCAA Executive Board held its Fall Meeting on November 7-11 at the Stardust Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, with a full business agenda being completed. Treasurer David Soloff presented the yearly audit which after being reviewed by the Board was unanimously accepted. Robert Harrison, Chairman of the Education Committee, reported that the Masonry Estimating Course would be held in Toronto on Nov. 29 and 30.
The All-Weather Committee under the direction of Charles Velardo was continuing to hold All-Weather Conferences and additional meetings were planned for Dec. 3 and 4 in Columbus and Louisville. The International Masonry Industry All-Weather Committee would meet on Nov 19 in Washington, D.C. to consider further implimentation of the five point program. The Nominating Committee advised that it had met on Thursday, Nov. 7. and it presented to the Executive Board a slate of officers for consideration at the Annual Meeting in February. These were accepted and in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws members would be advised by special notice. The Special Study Committee on Ethics gave a detailed report on a 13 point program. A resolution honoring Harry Heuer, Portland, Oregon, was spread upon the record for the many years that he loyally served the Masonry Industry.
On Friday afternoon members played the Stardust Championship Golf Course with Mickey Soloff taking Low Gross Honors and tying for Low Net with Charles Bolek. Most durable golfers were Charles Velardo and Virgil Griener. Closing out the events the Board attended the Lido Review.
C/M Contractors Meet
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The November 19th meeting of the Concrete & Masonry Contractors Association featured a panel discussion on the ordering and dispatching of materials. Moderator for the meeting was Ron Anderson of Glacier. Representing the Contractors were: Ralph Werner, Emery Langlie, William Smith and Ford Carlson. Representing the Suppliers were: George Blomquist (Marshall); Wilford Bernard (Friedheim); Vic Hendries (Suburban); James Wagner (Ready Mix); Dave Burr (Brock-White); and Dick Einck (Midwest Brick).
Peter Fosco Elected
Peter Fosco
After building the Laborers' International Union of North America, AFL-CIO, into one of America's largest trade unions, General President Joseph V. Moreschi has retired to assume the office of President-Emeritus.
The General Executive Board of the 550,000-member Laborers' International Union accepted Moreschi's resignation with regret and unanimously elected Peter Fosco to succeed him.
Fosco, General Secretary-Treasurer of the LIU since 1950, has been a close and loyal advisor to Moreschi for many years.
Vice-President Terence J. O'Sullivan of San Francisco was elected by the Board to succeed Fosco as General Secretary-Treasurer.
Under Moreschi's guidance, the Laborers has grown from a scant 20,000 members in 1926 when he became President to the fifth largest union in the AFL-CIO today.
Fosco began his career with the Laborers' Union in 1915 when he joined Local 2 in Chicago. Later, he (Continued on page 22)
