Business forecasters worried about a slowdown a few months ago. But that was before it was clear that defense outlays would rise a few billions because of North Vietnamese gains during the new Year's offensive. And it was before those huge gold rushes put the dollar in such very grave jeopardy.

PRICE INCREASES ARE NOW ACCELERATING RAPIDLY, forcing analysts to revise their projections for the year. Increasing demand makes it easier to pass on rising costs. Some suppliers want to get schedules in shape in case controls are imposed. So industrial prices are climbing at a 5%-a-year rate, instead of the 3% originally predicted. Almost everything is rising.

What's more, labor costs are still going up rapidly. To be sure, some of the increases for the steel-workers and the machinists-will represent catch-ups with other lines. They will constitute completion of last year's round. But now there is fear that a new round may get going-starting in copper; the recent pacts call for wage packages greater than the 6% of autos. It can mean another year of inflation.

RETAIL SALES WILL RISE BRISKLY, at least during the next few months. That is the prediction of many economists in both business and government. Incomes have been shooting up. They went up twice as fast in January-March as in the comparable period a year ago. Sure, higher prices washed out some of the gain. But buying power rose, too. Consumers are bound to respond.
