Mason Contractor: G. Salvucci Company
All-Weather Program
Raw winter weather can result in many lost man hours as well as substandard work for mason contractors, but G. Salvucci Co., Newton Highlands, Mass., solved these knotty problems with a system of prefabricated polyethylene panels attached to the scaffolding to keep their men working comfortably during the coldest days.
Using the best masons available, only minimal time was lost on the four-story Jordan Marsh Department Store project in Braintree, Mass., despite last winter's biting New England gales, the Salvucci firm reports.
Before cold weather hit, grading, excavation and an access road first were roughed out, and construction utilities completed. Because the design used masonry as a veneer, an early start on the structural steel frame helped to maintain work momentum into winter.
