Question:
Our renewal Workmen's Compensation modification has gone up to 1.47. What can we do to reduce it?
Answer:
Since you are in a regulated state (most are) where the modification is fixed by a rating authority rather than competitively quoted by the insurance companies, I personally would ask for a Contributory Dividend Plan or Retrospective Rating Plan (One Year Plan J), do everything possible to cut losses down to a minimum this year and then hope for a substantial refund after expiration. Based upon the loss figures you sent me, the odds of achieving it are in your favor. Make it a point to stress that accident prevention is part of the job and that you are relying upon your superintendents to reduce them this year. It should work. Then, when your experience modification again goes into the credit column (below 1.00), you might again consider pure guaranteed cost insurance. I'd be glad to advise you again when that time comes.
