Construction Estimates and Costs, Fourth Edition, by Harry E. Pulver, Consulting Engineer. $16.50 637 pages plus 127 illustrations; 6 x 9; McGraw-Hill Book Co., 330 W. 42nd St., New York, N.Y. 10036.
The Fourth Edition of Construction Estimates and Costs has been revised and updated to reflect current thought and practice in construction estimating. Most of the diagrams have been corrected or redrawn, almost all of the illustrative estimates and many of the tables have been revised. This comprehensive volume covers every detail of the estimator's job, describing step-by-step methods for computing material, labor, plant and overhead costs, plus necessary profit.
This edition includes modern data on wages and prices and new information on handling and transporting materials, and it gives fast, dependable aid for all types of estimates, as well as hundreds of diagrams and tables which shorten the estimating time.
All major types of construction work are taken into account, from excavating, piling and bracing, and using concrete, masonry, wood, and structural steel in various ways, to roofing and flashing, lathing and plastering, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical work, and painting. Each phase of construction work is presented separately. Simple arithmetical methods for accurately estimating its cost are illustrated. The author proceeds step-by-step from preliminary investigation, through approximate estimates and complete, detailed estimates.
Construction Estimates and Costs contains scores of specimen tables, charts, and diagrams of 120 different elements of construction work; hundreds of tables which provide data on material, weights, working time, machine capacity, vehicles, rates, costs, labor hours consumed on various jobs; and diagrams which supply data on labor, plant, crew, and material costs. The tables and diagrams in the book show variations in quantities as well as in price of material and labor. Practically all are straight line diagrams, easy to read and use.
This volume is a practical working guide for practical men who want to learn estimating from the ground up, and a source of reference for the seasoned estimator.
