The author Harry E. Pulver, has more than 50 years' experience in teaching, consulting, and practical engineering. The methods given in the book were developed as a result of his wide experience.

Scheduling Handbook. Edited by James J. O'Brien, P.E., President, MDC Systems Corporation. $18.50. 598 pages with 437 illustrations; 72 x 94; McGraw-Hill Book Co., Handbook Series, 330 W. 42nd St., New York, N.Y. 10036.

As a comprehensive guide to virtually every operational scheduling technique used in commerce, industry, and government today, the Scheduling Handbook employs a practical approach with numerous case studies to show the application of the principles involved.

All the recognized scheduling theories and techniques are presented in sufficient detail to allow the reader to choose and apply the method best suited to his needs. The background of each technique or theory and its use in specific areas are fully discussed, as are the potential and limitation of each approach.

Many recent techniques most having been developed during the past decade-are detailed, including CPM, PERT, precedence scheduling, resource allocation, Management Information Systems, PERT-cost SIS, MTM, IMPACT, GASP, SPERT, and CLASS. All have computerization relationship. In addition, several relatively untested but theoretically correct scheduling techniques are presented, including Time-Cost Optimization, Line-of-Balance, and rostering.

The Scheduling Handbook is carefully arranged so that the individual chapters are relatively independent, thereby making it ideal for self-utilization and comprehension. A matrix is shown in Chapter 1 to help the reader learn how to use the Handbook. For example, if an industrial engineer were planning a Hospital Capital Program and was at that time interested in the design phase, he would probably first consider Chapter 29, Hospital Scheduling. Then he would want to review time scheduling techniques in Chapters 3 (CPM) or 4 (PERT). Next he might want to review Capital Scheduling (Chapter 17), followed by functional scheduling on design in Chapter 18. Thus, his sequence of approach and depth of review are related to his own needs and interests. An objective view (Continued on page 23)
