In Other Words...
By Walter T. Derk
MCAA Insurance Consultant

Much has been written about insurance but many times the specific question which you would like answered is not covered. Readers are invited to submit questions on any insurance matter. While all may not be answered via this column, every question submitted will be studied and answered by Mr. Derk personally.

Question?
How often do I have to dig into insurance overhead figures and adjust them for bid and job cost purposes?

Answer:
Annually, if you don't want to be caught short and have to take the additional cost out of profit. Also ask your insurance representative to notify you of any new rate changes as soon as he knows about them, rather than wait for them to affect you.

Calculating the figures, by the way, is his job, too. You can then adjust them as you wish.

Question?
It seems to me that service is getting slower and that insurance companies are taking a longer time to do things. Is this true nationally?

Answer:
Yes, you are right. An enormous amount of detail and paper work is involved and despite increased use of computers and the like, it is now taking them longer than ever to get things done. The industry has a problem, too, in keeping up with the demand for good, qualified and well-trained technicians, similar to other businesses, including your own.

Question?
Why should my Compensation rates go up because I happened to have some unusual losses last year? Isn't this why we all buy insurance in the first place?

Answer:
From the figures you sent me, I can probably fill you in: We all buy insurance to protect against unexpected loss, and it is true that if you have 3 men fall from a scaffold, everybody who buys insurance is going to help pay for that catastrophe from the corner candy store to the big manufacturing (Continued on page 29)
