Formwork For Concrete by the American Concrete Institute. 364 pages with 500 illustrations; 8½ x 11; hard cover; $18.50; Publications Dept., American Concrete Institute, Box 4754, Detroit, Mich. 48219.
Retaining the same profusely illustrated format of its first edition, ACI's SP-4, Formwork for Concrete reveals how to save time and money, while emphasizing safety, when planning, building, or using formwork for cast-in-place concrete.
Included in this second edition are a glossary of formwork terms and the revised ACI Standard, "Recommended Practice for Concrete Formwork" (ACI 347-68).
In line with the revised standard, SP-4 now contains more detailed recommendations regarding time of removal of forms and shores where this is not covered by job specifications. These recommendations, based on the experience of committee members, consider the ratio of design live load to dead load of the structure as well as the span-clear spans of members being stripped, in addition to time and concrete temperature which previously were the governing factors.
Another significant area of change is in recommendations for shoring and reshoring of multistory structures. Relative merits of reshoring and "permanent" shoring systems are discussed; design recommendations include a list of factors to be considered when planning support for a number of successive stories of new constructions.
A few changes in tolerance recommendations have been made, and safety factors for strand deflection devices used in pretensioned members and for lifting inserts in tilt-up and precast panels have been added. Other changes relate to details of splicing and bracing, improved stability of falsework assemblies, adjustments of formwork for settlement, and camber to compensate for optical sag and for deflection of the concrete member under service load.
New data are presented on cold weather forming practices, and information on structures designed for composite action has been expanded to deal more specifically with deflection and camber problems. Additions and changes in the section on horizontal slipforms reflect current field practice in slope and channel paving. A brief section on the forming of cast-in-place pipe has also been added.
