New Steel Nomenclature
The "now generation" in steel construction speaks a new language. You are suddenly old-fashioned if you ask for a steel "I-beam" or "WF beam." There is no more "F" in the designation for wide flange structural steel shapes. American Standard beams are now S-beams, not I-beams. Channels and angles now are identified by letters instead of symbols.
These changes result from recommendations by American Iron & Steel Institute's committee of structural steel producers for standardization of the nomenclature for structural steel shapes. They hope to eliminate slip-ups that might be caused either by use of different nomenclatures by different steel producers or by the use of the wrong nomenclature for some shapes having similar profiles but slightly different dimensions. Computer processing was another important consideration in establishing the new system for steel shape nomenclature.
A booklet entitled "Standard Nomenclature for Structural Steel Shapes" describing the new ordering system for steel plate may be obtained by writing: E. W. Gradt, Staff Representative, Committees of Structural Steel & Steel Plate Producers, American Iron & Steel Institute, 150 E. 42 St., New York, N.Y. 10017.
Safety Catalog Available
The bi-annual 1970 motion picture catalog, the largest in the world dedicated to safety, can now be obtained gratis by business, industry, associations and clubs. It will be mailed, upon request, to those anxious to curtail tragic accidents in factories, on highways, in offices or homes, and anywhere they may happen. This year the catalog has a greatly augmented supplement, listing a large consignment of newly acquired subjects, featuring supervisor training, on and off-the-job safety, Spanish language films, office and fire safety.
Concerned executives in major industries and organizations have become increasingly aware of the vital need to anticipate costly accidents to employees, equipment, or both. They know visual education, through films, provides a forewarning. Both catalog and supplement are free upon application to the Greater Los Angeles Chapter-National Safety Council, 3388 West 8th Street, Los Angeles, California, 90005.
If you add the cost of litter removal from private property, the annual national litter bill approaches $1 billion.
