CMCA Convention Report

Contract law, labor negotiations, industry promotion and high-bond mortar methods were the topics presented to the record number of delegates attending the fourth Annual Convention of the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association in the Sutton Place Hotel, Toronto, January 28-31.

At the association's annual meeting on January 29, Harry Morstead, Calgary, Alta., was elected president, succeeding Eugene B. George, Kitchener, Ont., who stepped down after a three-year term. He had held this office since the founding of the CMCA.

On the same slate and elected were Frank Camisso, Toronto, first vice president; Robert E. Beaupre, Vancouver, B.C., second vice president, and Peter L. Martini, Toronto, treasurer.

Elected regional vice presidents and additional directors for 1971 were William J. Young. Paul Hardy, Alfred P. Barbini, Antonio Zanin, John Prall, Gunner Hagblom, Ron H. Welch, Robert J. Hillis, Dino Maniago, Fernand Des Ormeaux, Robert B. Beach and Eugene B. George.

The convention officially opened on the evening of January 28 at the President's Reception. The following morning's activities began with the annual meeting, followed by the noon luncheon featuring Mayor William Dennison of Toronto as speaker. Appearing as panelists during the afternoon sessions were John F. Sadler, Construction Industry Credit Bureau; David I. Bristow of Shibley, Righton and MeCutcheon; Don Williams, Canadian vice president of BM & PIUA, and Bruce Binning of Mathews Dinsdale & Clark. Serving as moderator was Jim Ricci of Smithfield Masonry Contractors Ltd.

"Las Vegas Night," with all forms of gambling and light entertainment, highlighted the social events.
