Latest patient room conveniences and attractive staff work and dining areas are highlights of the new Amesbury Building at The Waltham Hospital. The all-brick six floor facility was dedicated on January 17th.

Housed in the Amesbury Building, designed by the hospital's architects, Ritchie Associates, Inc., Chestnut Hill, are 84 additional beds (all semi private on two floors) with emphasis on continuing care; new laboratories; a large blood donor facility; and a spacious employee dining room overlooking the surrounding landscape.

The Waltham Hospital's laboratory technicians participated in color selection of individual counter tops and cabinets for their work stations. A continuous row of windows above the technicians work surface introduces natural light and provides a view to the outside for visual interest, noted Donald Ritchie, AIA, President of Ritchie Associates. A young woman architect, Mrs. Martha Bil Manevich of the Ritchie staff, was job captain.

Hospital officials plan to utilize the building's top floor as a community mental health center, implementing a $200,000 construction grant awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health. "New pediatric facilities will also be added in the near future to better serve the greater Waltham area in all branches of family health care", said hospital director Robert Lovejoy. The modern central kitchen is located on the ground floor of the new building which is fully air conditioned. The addition of the new beds on the second and third floors brings the hospital's total up to 282.
