Masonry Goes To The AIA Convention

As a cooperative effort, the Masonry Institute of Michigan and the National Association of Dealers and Distributors, Michigan Chapter, participated in the recent AIA Convention and National Building Products Exposition held at Cobo Hall in Detroit. Interest was high among architects in the masonry display which featured "Innovations in Brick". Engineered masonry, masonry panels, and all-weather construction were discussed by slide presentations; and literature provided by the International Masonry Institute, Washington, D.C., was distributed. Bond patterns and wall shapes provided the background for the highlight of the display the very slender parabolic arches in brick.

It was of great interest during the show to see viewers cautiously approach the slender arches, touch them lightly, look on the underside for supports, grasp them firmly, and shake them. Finally, the question would come-How? Kudos are in order for the three mason contractors and their employees who acted as a team to produce the display. While Clarence Gleeson, Inc., New Hudson, Michigan, built the arches off site, Barron Construction Company, Pontiac, Michigan, performed the on-site construction. Monte Costella and Company, Southfield, Michigan, assisted with the arch erection. With the planning help of the Structural Clay Products Institute and NADD, the result was a beautiful display-indicative of masonry's aesthetic qualities.

"Lay one and lay it right!"

MCAA Regional Vice President Charles Velardo "admonishes" John McDonough, Director of Apprentice Training for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, on the proper method of laying brick. The impromptu demonstration took place at the recent Massachusetts State Conference Apprentice Contest held in Framingham. Bricklayers, left to right, Edward McManus, Local #29; Edward Mendenhall, Local #2; and Robert Dotson, Local #29, press on to meet the show opening.
