Honor Montie Smallen

Montie Smallen was honored by members of the Portland Chapter MCAA and the Oregon Masonry Guild at their ladies night banquet upon the occasion of his retirement from the masonry industry. Montie has been active in the trade for 45 years serving as an apprentice, journeyman bricklayer and mason contractor.

Included in the many honors given Smallen and accolades received at this occasion, Tom Crawford, president of the Portland Chapter, presented him with a lifetime honorary membership.

Montie and his wife Marie, are now busy building their ranch house and farm on the banks of the Clackamas River, which just happens to be one of Oregon's finest fishing streams.

Ray F. Wimer, MCAA Northwest Field Representative, presented a plaque to Montie Smallen, following the reading of a letter from George Miller commending him for the many contributions he has given to the masonry industry, both on a local level and national level. Best wishes were extended from the President and the Board of Directors upon his retirement, concluding with the best in the years ahead in traveling and fishing to this popular couple.

During his years, Montie has trained 23 apprentices and supervised the masonry work on many of Oregon's major buildings. It will be difficult for the construction industry to reconcile itself that Montie Smallen will not be where the action is and on the job in the field he served so well.

During 1970 6,500 people were killed as a result of driving off the roadway, according to an annual survey by The Travelers Insurance Companies. Reasons for this type of accident are tired motorists, unsafe cars, and those under the influence of alcohol.

Make your plans now to attend the 22nd Annual MCAA Convention and Educational Trade Show, Americana Hotel, Bal Harbour, Florida, January 7-12, 1972.
