The Revolution in Masonry Today

whether it contains new products or old, whether it was prefabricated or built on the site, whether it was built by masons, carpenters, or metal workers. He simply wants and is entitled to the most building for his construction dollar.

Ten years of patient market development have proven that stronger mortars like Sarabond and Threadline can make masonry a winner in these terms.

Consider the evidence. Threadline is a thinbed mortar. The ingredients are blended in an ordinary pail to the consistency of toothpaste and applied to the block with a caulking gun. Although an epoxy, Threadline is a water-based system and cleanup is extremely easy. Full strength is achieved in 72 hours or less, and the bond is stronger than the block itself.

The justification for the use of Threadline is mason productivity. Since the bed joints are nominally of zero thickness, a block ground to close, square tolerances is used: no tamping or adjusting in place is necessary, no level or line is used by the mason, consequently his productivity is at least doubled. This means block can frequently go in place at lower cost than precast or poured-in-place concrete.

Let's look at some major projects featuring this means of construction.

Alexander Arms is a residential building in the Hawaiian Islands. The mason contractor was able to meet all code requirements in this seismic area with loadbearing walls 14 stories tall. Penthouse Towers in Calgary, Alberta was built in the midst of a prairie winter and consists of block curtain walls six inches thick. The strength of Threadline permits these walls to withstand the extreme weather and high winds common in that part of our continent. Both of these projects used an architectural block to build towers at least as attractive as the finest precast concrete, yet at significantly lower cost. Penthouse Towers, in fact, was half the cost of the concrete originally specified.

Jefferson Square Apartments in Connecticut is a load bearing concrete block structure where masons laid 550 units per day. There are many impressive Threadline buildings in that area: it's an example of how aggressive marketing by suppliers and mason contractors has won business that otherwise would not be masonry.

Threadline is a natural for screen block applications; the installation is extremely rapid and the resulting economics

Alexander Arms in Honolulu is a 14-story building utilizing load-bearing ground block and Threadline.
